Walker Anderson (1801-1857) of Petersburg, VA, entered the University in 1815, joined the Philanthropic Society, and graduated in 1819. In 1822 he received the MA; in 1853, an LLD degree. He was professor of rhetoric and logic briefly in 1833, then became professor of natural philosophy and astronomy until 1836. After leaving the faculty, he moved to Florida to engage in a milling and mercantile business, eventually becoming the first chief justice of the state's supreme court.
